The Art of Photography Show Presents
An Evening with Photographers
When: Friday, October 23, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Location: Lyceum Theatre Gallery, Downtown San Diego in Horton Plaza
Brad Moore's latest work is shot in modest, well-worn suburban cities in Southern California. Built in the 1950s and 60s, these communities provided a new home and a future for the post-war generation. Moore primarily photographs buildings and shrubbery with an architectural approach, reflecting change, irony and evolution. He will show these and other related images, discussing his approach, his process and the areas under study.
Moore has been taking photographs for most of his life, an interest he discovered in adolescence. Moore went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in photography from Loma Linda University in Riverside, CA, where he later worked as a photo instructor. He also attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. In 1985 he started Aperion, where he developed and manufactured color-calibration products for photo labs. Since selling the company in 2005, Moore has been focused on fine art photography, showing in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. His work will be featured in the upcoming exhibit at the Museum of Photographic Arts called "State of Mind: A California Invitational".
Desiree Pfeiffer will discuss the "Baroness Trumpington" image which was selected by Charlotte Cotton for the Art of Photography Show 2009. Baroness Trumpington is a Conservative member of Britain's House of Lords. This image is from a series of fifteen portraits commissioned by the House of Lords' Works of Art Committee. Pfeiffer will also show and talk about other images from the series. This will include how the environments were selected, how sitters were chosen, and the difficulties associated with the project - limited time, shooting in a live work setting in which disruptions were aplenty, as well as the challenge of cooperation with established politicians. Pfeiffer will also discuss works not associated with the project, talking about her approach to location scouting, lighting, overall image creation (theory, not Photoshop, etc.), with a little film vs. digital analysis.
Pfeiffer, born in New York, is a portrait and fine-art photographer. She obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2004. Shortly thereafter she moved to London and began shooting for various magazines while also concentrating on personal projects. She has spent the past five years splitting her time between the U.K. and California and is currently residing in San Francisco where she is working on a new series. Much of her work has a voyeuristic quality, giving the viewer the sense that within the image there is a back-story.
